Bugsnag is proud to offer the $1,000 Careers in Coding Contest for code camp, college, or vocational students who wish to pursue a career in computer engineering and software development. The proceeds of contest are to be applied to the selected student’s educational expenses.
In support of ongoing education, professional goals and improving software for all users, we want to encourage everyone to make an impact through their coding ability and expertise.
The Bugsnag Careers in Coding Contest is limited to computer science, software engineering and development majors, or code camp programs. While we encourage study and learning across all disciplines, we’ve created this contest to help developers hone their craft. If you are passionate about furthering your development career and sharing your expertise with others, we want to hear from you!

Twice per year, the Bugsnag Careers in Coding Contest will award one (1) individual passionate about coding and ongoing education with a $1,000 towards their educational expenses.
To apply, students must meet the minimum eligibility requirements and submit their Contest submissions by the submission deadlines which are on March 1, 2020 and October 30, 2020.

Bugsnag’s “Careers in Coding” Contest official rules
The Bugsnag “Careers in Coding” Contest (the “Contest”) is sponsored by Bugsnag, Inc. (“Bugsnag”). By entering the Contest and accepting the terms herein, you agree to be bound by the following rules (“Official Rules”), which constitute a binding agreement between you and Bugsnag. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED.
No payment necessary to enter or win.
Subject to these Official Rules, the Contest is open only to United States citizens or permanent residents physically residing in the United States and the District of Columbia, who (i) are at least 18 years old as of the beginning of the Contest period; and (ii) are currently enrolled in an accredited 2-4 year technical/vocational college, university or Code Camp program, as governed by the U.S. Department of Education website, located in the United States (“Code School”) and (iii) studying to computer science, software, engineering and development majors, or a code camp program at such Code School. Winners will be required to provide enrollment and unofficial transcript verification for their Code Schools before we are able to award a prize.
The Contest is not available to individuals who are resident outside of the United States and who attend Code School outside of the United States. The Contest is void outside the United States or where prohibited or restricted by law. All applicable federal, state, and local laws apply.
The Contest is open to all entrants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status, who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements. Employees of Bugsnag, and their parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, and any other party involved in the development or administration of this Contest, and their immediate family members or household members are not eligible to enter or receive a prize. Past winners may not enter to win additional prizes.
Bugsnag will select two prize recipients during the 2019 - 2020 academic year. The application period will begin at 11:59 PM PST on xxxx, 2019 for the first round and Submissions must be received by 11:59 PM PST on March 1, 2020. Submissions received after this deadline will automatically be applied to the next Contest period which runs from March 2, 2020 to October 30, 2020 at 11:59 PM PST. Winners will be selected from all eligible Submissions and notified within sixty (60) days of the determination of the winner by Bugsnag.
To enter you must submit your application or entry online here, including your personal contact information and the name of the Code School where you are enrolled. Your application or entry will include a 250-500 word essay describing your career related objectives as those objectives apply to the computer software industry and how your interest in coding and your coding skills will help you achieve these objectives. The essay text will be submitted into a text box in the overall Contest submission form on https://bugsnagform.typeform.com/to/dAUtu6. The essay you submit to enter the Contest is referred to as your “Submission”.
Only one Submission per person is acceptable so multiple Submissions will not increase the odds of winning; the odds of winning a prize depend on the total number of eligible Submissions received. Bugsnag will not use, publicly display, distribute, publish, create derivative works based upon, use in promotional materials, or copy your Submission without your written consent. Bugsnag expressly reserves the right to disqualify any entrants and/or Submissions that are inaccurate, incomplete, or that Bugsnag believes in good faith to be generated by an automated means or scripts or are the result of plagiarism. Submissions generated by script, macro, or other automated means, are void. Entrants must submit original work in their Submissions. Entrants must not submit content that violates or infringes another’s rights, including, but not limited to, privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights. More specifically, entrants must not in any way mention, refer or otherwise allude to the name, brand, product, logo, or trademark of any third party in their Submissions. No images may be submitted as part of a Submission. Entrants must not submit content that is inappropriate, indecent, lewd, pornographic, obscene, hateful, tortious, defamatory, slanderous or libelous (as determined by Bugsnag at its sole discretion) as part of a Submission. Entrants must not disparage Bugsnag, or any other person or party affiliated with the promotion and administration of this Contest. Each entrant hereby grants and agrees to grant Bugsnag a non-exclusive, worldwide license to use and reproduce entrant’s Submission in connection with administration of this Contest and for no other purpose.
All personal information collected in connection with the Contest will be used for the purposes of administering the Contest and in accordance with the Bugsnag Privacy Policy.
Bugsnag will select one prize winner from all eligible Submissions during each Contest period. Subject to applicable law, you agree that if your Submission is selected as a winner, (i) you will use the prize, which consists of a check for $1,000 towards payment of tuition at your Code School, (ii) the prize will not be awarded to you directly and (iii) prizes that are not used for the academic term for which they are awarded will be forfeited. If any potential recipient fails to provide proof of identity, proof of enrollment, is found to have violated the Official Rules, or otherwise does not meet eligibility requirements, or if the Contest is determined to be in conflict with any federal, state, or local law, regulation, or ordinance, then the prize will be forfeited and may be awarded at Bugsnag’s sole discretion to an alternate entrant, subject to verification of eligibility. Willing recipients are solely responsible for any state or federal tax liability in association with acceptance of the prize.
Prizes may not be assigned or transferred. No cash equivalent prize will be awarded. The awarding of any prize is contingent upon full compliance with these Official Rules. Bugsnag is not responsible for any typographical or other error in the printing of these Official Rules.
All Submissions will be reviewed and judged by representatives of Bugsnag, who are qualified based on the criteria presented to all entrants at the time of entry, to determine the winning recipients. In addition to those criteria, all Submissions will be judged based on the following criteria: written communication skills, commitment to innovation in technology, dedication to making a positive impact on the world through a career in coding, academic ability, and overall application strength. All decisions are final. Bugsnag reserves the right not to award a prize if, in its sole discretion, it does not receive any qualified Submissions.
Winning recipients will be notified via the contact information provided to Bugsnag with their Submissions within 30-60 days of the end of the applicable Contest period, which can be via email or mail. If Bugsnag does not hear from the winner within 7 days of notification from Bugsnag, then Bugsnag reserves the right to disqualify that winner and to award the prize at Bugsnag’s sole discretion to an alternate entrant, subject to verification of eligibility.
Except where prohibited by law, winning recipients consent to the use of their name, photo and/or likeness, biographical information, entry and statements attributed to each winning recipient (if true) for advertising and promotional purposes without further permission or compensation.
ENTRANTS AND PRIZE RECIPIENTS AGREE TO RELEASE BUGSNAG, ITS EMPLOYEES, REPRESENTATIVES, AGENTS, CONTRACTORS, ASSIGNS, ADVERTISERS, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, AND SHAREHOLDERS FROM ANY AND ALL LIABILITY, LOSS, DAMAGE, COST, CLAIM ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE CONTEST, THE PRIZE WINNER SELECTION, AND THE CONTEST ADMINISTRATION PROCESS.
Bugsnag is not responsible for lost or incomplete Submissions or technical, hardware, software or telephone failures of any kind, lost or unavailable network connections, fraud, incomplete, garbled or delayed computer transmissions, whether caused by Bugsnag, entrants, by any technical or human error which may occur in the processing of Submissions which may damage a user's system, or limit a user's ability to participate in this Contest. Bugsnag reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel or suspend this Contest should a virus, bug, computer problem, unauthorized human intervention, or other cause beyond Bugsnag’s control inhibit or corrupt the administration, security, or fairness of the Contest, and Bugsnag may disqualify any person who engages in or attempts any such activity.
Bugsnag reserves the right to modify or terminate the Contest at any time for any reason in its sole discretion, with or without notice. If any provision of the Official Rules of this Contest shall be held void, voidable, or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect. These Official Rules are governed by the law of the State of California, without reference to rules governing choice of laws. Except as regarding any action seeking equitable relief, including without limitation for the purpose of protecting any Bugsnag confidential information and/or intellectual property rights, any controversy or claim arising out of or relating to the Contest or these Official Rules shall be settled by binding arbitration in accordance with the commercial arbitration rules, in effect at the time the proceedings begin, of the American Arbitration Association. Any such controversy or claim shall be arbitrated on an individual basis and shall not be consolidated in any arbitration with any claim or controversy of any other party.
IN NO EVENT WILL BUGSNAG BE LIABLE TO ANY ENTRANTS FOR INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, EXEMPLARY, PUNITIVE OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES (INCLUDING LOSS OF USE, DATA, BUSINESS OR PROFITS) ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THE CONTEST, WHETHER SUCH LIABILITY ARISES FROM ANY CLAIM BASED UPON CONTRACT, WARRANTY, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), STRICT LIABILITY OR OTHERWISE, AND WHETHER OR NOT BUGSNAG HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH LOSS OR DAMAGE. Some jurisdictions do not allow the limitation or exclusion of liability for incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you.
Ideal applicants are those who are seriously committed to learning code and passionate about the ability to make an impact on their community both online and off. Student applications will be judged based on their dedication to furthering their education, expertise and coding ability.
The winner of the contest will be notified via email/phone approximately 30-60 days after the application deadline has passed.
For each application cycle (two cycles per year), Bugsnag will award one (1) individual passionate about coding with $1,000 to be applied towards their educational expenses.
